THE BIG STORY
Americans Are Unsure Who Leads AI

WHAT HAPPENED
Pew Research Center surveyed U.S. adults about the global AI race and found a clear perception gap: Americans are three times more likely to say China is more advanced in AI than the U.S. At the same time, 43% say it is extremely or very important for the U.S. to be the world leader in AI, while 51% believe AI will increase the gap between rich and poor countries. In other words, Americans are watching the AI race with a mix of urgency, uncertainty, and concern about who benefits.
THREE TAKEAWAYS
1
Americans do not appear fully confident that the U.S. is leading the AI race, with many either seeing China ahead or saying they are not sure.
2
AI leadership is not just a technology issue; it is also becoming a public confidence, economic, and geopolitical issue.
3
The concern that AI could widen global inequality shows that people are thinking beyond innovation and asking who gets access, advantage, and power.
TWO QUICK HITS
What else is moving
Google Maps the AI Economy
Google launched ATLAS, a new study analyzing how people use its AI tools across work and daily life. The first findings suggest AI use is spreading across many occupations, but most workers are still using it selectively rather than fully automating tasks.
Health in ChatGPT Starts Rolling Out
OpenAI is rolling out Health in ChatGPT to U.S. users, allowing people to connect Apple Health and supported medical records with permission. The feature is designed to help users understand lab results, track changes, prepare for appointments, and ask more personalized health questions.
